Seventh Target Batch

For the seventh round of Target Selection (Batch07), we selected 31 proteins involved in the 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway. The MEP/DOXP pathway is known by a number of names, but it describes the alternate non-mevalonate pathway for terpenoid, or isoprenoid, precursor biosynthesis. The seven enzymes of this pathway are known as DOXP, and IspC through IspH (although many earlier nomenclature systems persist.) This pathway takes place in plant plastids, certain apicomplexan protozoa and many bacteria. The absence of the MEP pathway and isoprenoid biosynthesis in the human host makes the enzymes very attractive as potential targets for drug development. These targets supplement MEP targets nominated by the scientific community (see batch CR_16 in the target status tracking document on the Target Status page (scroll to the bottom where batch is CR_16.
